Q.1   Discuss the role of administration in improving our educational system.


Common roles of administrators are to ensure all schools, teachers, counselors, are collaborating towards a common goal while improving standards and opportunities. Together, with proper leadership, school systems can meet goals set forth by school boards and foster students that are highly educated and prepared for their futures.

Today, education has never been more important. The time is now to place leaders into schools districts that are passionate about children and the education they receive. School administrators embrace the extremely important role of ensuring the system is operating effectively and efficiently. Those placed in administration roles, such as a principal, dean, or head master; demonstrate a high level of excellent in every realm within education.

Administration has exciting leadership opportunities, which often play large roles in forming curriculums, goals, budgets, timelines, state regulations, mandated testing, as well as performance measures to ensure all educators are able to meet personal and professional goals. Together, administrators and faculty will carve a path to success for all.

Successful administrators form distinguished teams to support the goals and aspirations of students. With the assistance of vice principles, goals can be further achieved with greater outcome and acceptance.

Administrators often learn techniques to relate to children of all ages, of all backgrounds. Having the capability to relate to children is not only essential to administrators, but also vital to the overall success of school districts and standardized testing. School districts must regulate per guidelines set forth at local, state and federal levels. Administrators must remain active in continuing education programs, often returning to leadership programs such as a doctoral degree. A master’s degree is generally earned prior to entering an administrators role but this depends greatly on the school district and demand for administrators.

Administrators are leaders who take pride in their strategic planning, tremendous support in every sector, respect for the education system, including faculty, students, parents, and school board members. Often admin professionals are managing multiple situations at once and unlike teachers, work year round. Duties of an administrator are commonly budgets and proper allocation of funds to produce outstanding scholars to reach their highest potential.

    Head of Discipline – Role and Responsibilities

    The responsibilities of Heads of Discipline will include:

    1. Providing academic leadership in the discipline, including advising junior colleagues in the context of promotion and promoting colleagues’ research opportunities.
    2. Having responsibility for the oversight of standards pertaining to the discipline, and (with Head of School) the preservation of disciplinary integrity.
    3. Briefing the Head of School on any matters relating to the welfare of the discipline in College.
    4. Participating on nominating committees and advising the Head of School on recruitment of part-time staff in the discipline, as appropriate.
    5. Being a member of Executive Committee of the School and (where one exists) the Research Committee
    6. Contributing to policy formation and strategic planning.
    7. Determining, with disciplinary colleagues, content and curriculum of major courses, e.g. Moderatorships or half-Moderatorships; liaising with course directors of interdisciplinary courses or taught postgraduate courses.
    8. Chairing meetings of the discipline.
    9. Proposing to the Director of Teaching and Learning (Undergraduate) the distribution of teaching for staff in the discipline.
    10. Representing, or nominating a representative of, the discipline on cross-School committees, e.g. Two-subject Moderatorship.
    11. Recommending to the Senior Lecturer the admission of non-standard students to the discipline.
    12. Advising the Director(s) of Postgraduate Studies / Research as appropriate on the assignment of research supervisors; advising on choice of examiners and all discipline-specific research issues within the School.
    13. Participating in quality reviews.
    14. Dealing with professional/accreditation issues affecting the discipline.

    Headteachers and teachers have a responsibility of ensuring that learners get the best out of their studies. Considering this, there is extensive research trying to understand the role of head teachers and teachers in a school institution. The head teacher is in charge of the whole school and therefore supervises the entire school program and is fully responsible for the effectiveness and proficiency of all activities in the school (Walker, & Dimmock, 2012). However, the role of head teachers has become more complex and overloaded over the past decade (Fullan, 1991). According to Fullan (1991), effective school heads are a minority. Due to the urgent need to make the school a better place for learners, the government has focused on improving school management by strengthening the role of head teachers. Quality education depends highly on how well the school is being managed (Beatriz et al., 2008).


    Promote performance

    Head teachers have a responsibility of promoting academic performance in a school institution. The quality of education in many countries is evaluated based on the number of students who pass in their national examination. In light of this, it is important for head teachers to put the necessary measures in place in order to ensure the school institution is well organized and managed. According to Rutter et al (1979), a student performance can only be improved if the school is well managed. This can only be achieved by defining a mission and vision of the school and ensure the students clearly comprehend it.
